The divorce rate has been seen to increase greatly during times of hardship, war, and major events.

 Divorce throws people into some stages of grief, whether you’re an initiator or on the receiving end of divorce papers.

These stages of grief which are experienced include; denial, anger, depression, bargaining, and acceptance (popularly called the five stages of grief or five emotions during the divorce process).

What is Divorce?

Divorce on a common note is the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or other competent body.

Divorce is also known to be the dissolution of marriage which entails the process of terminating a marriage or marital union.

In most countries around the world, divorce requires the sanction of a court or other authority in a legal process, which involves issues of distribution of property, child custody, alimony, parenting time, child support, and child access/visitation, and so on.

Many countries permit divorce partners to re-marry, depending on their will whether to get married or not.

On the other hand, there’re few countries that do not allow divorce and they include; Vatican City (which is an ecclesiastical state with no procedure for divorce), The Philippines (divorce for non-Muslim Filipinos), and The British Crown Dependency of Sark.

Causes of divorce

You may be thinking, what are the most common reasons why a couple chooses to divorce?

The common reasons for divorce according to research and verse study by professionals include;

  • Adultery (that’s extra-marital sex; infidelity in marriages)
  • Domestic violence
  • Midlife crisis
  • Addictions (ranging from alcoholism, smoking, and gambling)
  • Work holism and many other factors.

“If a marriage survives more than 20 years, it’s unlikely to end in a divorce, as 53% of divorces were of marriages that have lasted 10 to 15 years. The first 5 years are relatively divorce-free”

Effect of Divorce

Some effects of divorce can be seen to manifest behaviorally and psychologically.

Effect of Divorce on children

  • Depression
  • Greater unhappiness
  • Anxiety
  • Less satisfaction with life
  • Weaker sense of personal control
  • Lower academic achievements than children from non-divorced families.

Effect of Divorce on adult

  • Poverty
  • They’re more likely to reserve food stamps, public assistance, or disability payments.

Grounds for Divorce

Grounds for divorce differs from country to country, but  some common grounds for divorce include;

  • Pregnancy before marriage
  • Insanity
  • Inability to consummate/impotency
  • Venereal disease and so on.

You should try to be a better person in your marriage to prevent divorce.
